"Founding engineer" means different things at different companies. After a few of them this is the job as I have lived it.

You are hired for decisions, not tickets#

Early on nobody else will choose the architecture, the cloud, or the deployment path. At Qoves I am the primary technical decision maker for backend, cloud and AI platform, which mostly means: decide fast, write the rationale down, and be ready to reverse with evidence. The cost of a reversible decision made this week beats the perfect decision made next quarter.

Keep the platform boring on purpose#

New product surface is where the company differentiates. Databases, queues and deployment stay conventional: PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions. Every exotic infrastructure choice is a loan taken against future engineering time.

Speed is a measurement problem#

The wins repeat across roles: 31% less cloud spend from right-sized autoscaling, 50% less alert noise from structured logging, faster iteration from small eval loops. None came from heroics. They came from instrumenting first and guessing last.

Ownership without drama#

Founding work means carrying pages, keeping backups restorable, and saying no to features that would break the platform you just stabilized. The unglamorous part is the part customers notice when nothing happens.

I take on contract work, in English or French.
